A major development emerged on Friday in the financial irregularities case linked to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, as a special CBI court in Alipore issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of the hospital. The order was passed after Ali failed to appear before the court during the scheduled hearing.
Akhtar Ali’s counsel informed the court that he was unwell and had been admitted to a hospital in Howrah late Thursday night. The CBI, however, opposed this submission, alleging that Ali had intentionally avoided appearing in court after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected earlier by the Calcutta High Court. Earlier this week, a single-judge bench of the High Court had turned down Ali’s anticipatory bail application, though the option of approaching a higher court remains open. During Friday’s proceedings, the lawyer representing former RG Kar principal and co-accused Sandeep Ghosh also made serious allegations against Akhtar Ali, following which Judge Sujit Kumar Jha of the second CBI court ordered issuance of the warrant.
Akhtar Ali had earlier approached the Vigilance Commission in 2023 with allegations of financial irregularities against then-principal Sandeep Ghosh. The CBI now alleges that Ali himself earned illegal financial gains through corruption in tender-related matters, with the proceeds allegedly deposited into his wife’s bank account.
