The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has presented a progress report on the investigation into the horrific rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The report was submitted to the Supreme Court ahead of a hearing on Tuesday.
The case, which has ignited nationwide outrage, was heard by a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra. The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognizance of the matter, demanding status reports from the CBI on the rape-murder investigation and from the Bengal government on the vandalism that occurred at the state-run medical facility.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, the Supreme Court criticized the Bengal government for its failure to properly manage the case and prevent the subsequent vandalism at the RG Kar hospital. The court expressed deep concern over the handling of the situation, pointing out several lapses by the state authorities.
The Calcutta High Court had previously transferred the investigation of the rape-murder case to the CBI on August 13, citing "serious lapses" by the hospital administration at RG Kar Medical College. The Bengal government is expected to file its status report today, detailing the progress of the investigation into the vandalism incident that followed the crime.
