CBI wants Narco Test for Sanjay Roy, moves to court

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has approached a Kolkata court seeking permission to conduct a narco analysis test on Sanjay Roy, the accused in the high-profile RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case. According to officials familiar with the matter, the request was made during a closed-door hearing before the additional chief judicial magistrate's court on Friday, where Roy’s consent for the test was sought.

Narco analysis, a controversial interrogation technique, was subject to restrictions by the Supreme Court in 2010. The court ruled that such tests cannot be administered without the consent of the accused and that the results, although often considered legally inadmissible, may be granted limited validity depending on the circumstances under which they were conducted. During the hearing, Roy was briefed on the procedure, with his legal counsel present.

This move by the CBI follows polygraph tests that were already conducted on Roy and other individuals linked to the case. The 31-year-old trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered on August 10 at the hospital, with her body discovered in a seminar hall. The Kolkata Police arrested Roy the following day and identified him as the prime suspect. However, Roy has consistently denied the charges, claiming he was being framed.

On August 23, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI, intensifying efforts to ensure a thorough investigation. The CBI’s request for a narco analysis test is seen as an attempt to further probe the truth behind Roy’s involvement.
