CCTV captures woman stabbing lover to death in Hooghly, arrested

In Bhadrashwar, a locality in Hooghly district, West Bengal, a woman named Shabnam Khatun has been arrested for allegedly stabbing her lover, 46-year-old Tapas Pramanik, to death. The incident has stirred alarm in the community, highlighting issues related to domestic violence and interpersonal conflicts that can lead to violence.

The incident unfolded in the Khundigachhi area of Bhadrashwar, where Shabnam, who previously resided with her husband in Rishra, had relocated to a rented accommodation. It was here that she formed a relationship with Tapas Pramanik. Initially, their relationship seemed to develop positively, marked by frequent visits and shared time. However, as time passed, signs of distress began to surface, suggesting escalating tensions between the two.

CCTV footage from the scene captured the moments leading up to the tragic stabbing. The video shows Shabnam and Tapas engaged in a heated argument on the street, escalating rapidly before Shabnam suddenly attacked Tapas with a knife. Eyewitnesses, including a cyclist passing by, were taken aback by the suddenness of the assault and rushed to intervene, but were unable to stop the attack in time. Following the stabbing, Tapas collapsed onto the street, bleeding profusely. Police were alerted immediately but, upon their arrival, Tapas was pronounced dead at the scene, having succumbed to his injuries.

The police promptly took Shabnam into custody and initiated a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Chandan Nagar Police Commissioner Amit P. Jawalkar confirmed that the initial findings suggest the murder stemmed from a longstanding interpersonal dispute. Authorities are also interviewing another woman who was present during the altercation to gather additional insights regarding the relationship dynamics between Shabnam and Tapas.

Local community leaders, including Suresh Mishra, Chairman of the Champadani Municipality, expressed their concerns over the incident. Mishra revealed that Tapas’s wife had previously left him, leading to his relationship with Shabnam, and acknowledged that the couple had been experiencing ongoing conflicts. He stated that reports indicated tensions had escalated significantly in the days leading up to the incident, culminating in the fatal confrontation that occurred on Friday evening.
