CEC Gyanesh Kumar orders immediate arrests, zero-tolerance approach on post-poll violence in Bengal

The Election Commission has adopted a zero-tolerance approach to post-poll violence in West Bengal, with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar issuing a stern warning that any attempt to disrupt law and order will invite immediate and strict action. The directive comes even before the formation and swearing-in of the new government, signaling heightened vigilance amid reports of unrest across multiple districts.

The Commission has instructed authorities to take prompt action against individuals involved in violence, vandalism, or incitement. Clear orders have been issued for immediate arrests of the accused, with emphasis on ensuring that public safety is not compromised. The move follows reports of clashes, attacks, and damage to political offices emerging soon after election results were declared.

Senior administrative and security officials have been placed on high alert. The Chief Secretary of West Bengal, the Director General of Police, the Kolkata Police Commissioner, and senior officials of Central Armed Police Forces have been directed to maintain constant coordination and readiness. District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police have been tasked with intensifying patrols, particularly in sensitive areas, to contain any escalation swiftly.

The situation on the ground remains tense, with incidents reported from regions including Bhangar, Baruipur, Howrah, and Nanoor. Allegations of violence have emerged from both sides of the political spectrum, including vandalism of party offices and killings of workers. While accusations and counter-accusations continue, the Election Commission has reiterated that maintaining peace after the democratic process is a collective responsibility, and any breach will face strict legal consequences.
