Centre clarifies no order to withhold Reuters’ X handle, calls platform ban a 'mistake'

The Government of India has clarified that it did not issue any active order to block the official X (formerly Twitter) account of news agency Reuters in India. The handle was recently made inaccessible to Indian users, with the platform displaying a notice that the account had been withheld “in response to a legal demand.”

A government spokesperson said, “There is no requirement from the Government of India to withhold Reuters handle. We are continuously working with X to resolve the problem.” The Centre has reached out to the platform for an explanation and requested that the restriction be lifted.

According to information available, the action may be linked to a directive issued earlier during Operation Sindoor in May 2025. At that time, the government had legally requested the withholding of several social media accounts, including that of Reuters. However, the Reuters account had remained accessible while other handles were withheld.

An official source stated that the original order was issued on May 7 but was not enforced at the time. The platform now appears to have implemented that earlier order, which the government considers a mistake given that the issue is no longer active. The Centre has asked X to clarify why the action was taken and to reverse the block.

Currently, Reuters' main X account and the Reuters World account are not accessible in India, while other affiliated handles such as Reuters Tech News, Reuters Asia, Reuters Fact Check, and Reuters China remain available. The withholding message displayed is a standard X notification shown when content is restricted in compliance with legal demands.
