Jr Doctors announce 'hunger strike' from today, says demands not met
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Saturday that India plans to fence its border with Myanmar to curb infiltrators, similar to the border barricade with Bangladesh. Speaking at the passing out parade of the first batch of the newly-constituted Assam Police Commando battalions in Tezpur, Shah emphasized the need to protect the India-Myanmar border and suggested the cessation of free movement with Myanmar.
Shah stated, "The India-Myanmar border will be protected like the Bangladesh border... The Government of India will stop the free movement with Myanmar." This move comes in response to concerns about illegal immigration, echoing Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh's plea to halt the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the Indo-Myanmar border.
As of now, only 10 km of the 1,643 km border shared by India and Myanmar is fenced in Manipur. The Free Movement Regime, initiated in the 1970s due to familial and ethnic ties, has been under scrutiny, with the government contemplating stricter border control measures.
