India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has left the team’s Champions Trophy 2025 camp in Dubai following the passing of his father, Alberts. Morkel departed for South Africa on February 17 after receiving the news, just days before India’s tournament opener against Bangladesh on February 20. The former South African fast bowler was actively involved in the team’s training sessions but was absent on Monday before his departure.
Morkel, who was appointed as India’s bowling coach in 2023, had earlier spoken about his close bond with his father. In a past interview, he revealed that his father was the first person he called after getting the India job. “I didn’t even go to my wife first,” Morkel had said. His absence now leaves India’s coaching staff short-handed as they prepare for the crucial tournament, with no update yet on when he will rejoin the team.
India’s squad is already dealing with the absence of key fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, making Morkel’s departure a significant setback for the bowling department. The pace attack will now depend on experienced seamer Mohammed Shami, while the spin department includes Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav. With three group-stage matches against Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand, the team faces a tough challenge ahead.
The Indian team, currently stationed in Dubai, has been undergoing intense practice sessions at the ICC Academy. After training on Sunday, the team opted for a rest day on Tuesday before resuming preparations on Wednesday. Players like KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill have been focusing on their batting, with Rahul specifically working on his power-hitting skills for the finisher’s role in the middle order.
India will play all their group-stage matches in Dubai, and if they progress, they could also feature in a semi-final and final at the Dubai International Stadium. While Morkel’s return remains uncertain, the team will continue preparations under the remaining coaching staff as they aim for a strong start in the Champions Trophy.
