Chandrababu Naidu urges Centre to scrap ₹500 and higher notes to fight corruption

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has once again urged the Centre to cancel ₹500 and higher denomination currency notes, claiming the move would significantly curb corruption and promote transparency. Speaking at the Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) annual Mahanadu Sabha in YSR Kadapa district, Naidu said the time had come for India to fully embrace digital currency.

Naidu revealed that he had earlier submitted a report to Prime Minister Narendra Modi recommending the withdrawal of ₹500, ₹1,000 and ₹2,000 notes. He reiterated that removing these denominations would make it easier to track financial flows and reduce avenues for illicit transactions.

The TDP chief said digital donations have simplified party contributions and highlighted how QR codes are replacing cash-based methods. He stressed that digital tools not only make fundraising easier but also ensure transparency and accountability.

Calling on the public and party workers for support, Naidu sought a show of hands from the crowd to endorse his appeal. The audience responded with applause, signalling approval for a potential shift away from high-value cash usage.
