The West Bengal budget session turned chaotic again as BJP MLAs tore assembly documents in protest against Speaker Biman Banerjee’s decision. Following this, the Speaker ordered that no business papers be provided to BJP legislators from Tuesday. Opposition MLAs, led by Suvendu Adhikari, walked out in protest. Criticizing the Speaker’s move, Adhikari said, "This is an unprecedented act in India's constitutional history, where opposition MLAs have been denied access to bulletins and proceedings." He further declared, "BJP MLAs will carry one ream of paper every day, and if needed, we will continue our protest by tearing them inside the House."
The uproar began after BJP MLAs submitted an adjournment motion regarding alleged attacks on Hindu temples and idols. Speaker Biman Banerjee rejected the proposal, stating that the issue had already been discussed. BJP MLAs raised slogans in protest, prompting the Speaker to leave his chair momentarily and order them to return to their seats. As tensions escalated, BJP legislators tore official papers, scattered them inside the House, and staged a walkout.
With the budget session’s second phase ongoing until March 20, political tensions remain high. The BJP has vowed to continue its protest against the Speaker’s decision, while the ruling Trinamool Congress has accused the opposition of deliberately disrupting assembly proceedings. Security personnel were deployed inside the House to maintain order, and further confrontations are anticipated in the coming days.
