OpenAI has introduced a significant change for its Indian user base, announcing country-specific pricing for ChatGPT subscriptions that allows payments to be made in Indian rupees (INR). This is the first time that users in India will not have to pay in US dollars. The move, aimed at making the service more accessible and affordable, was announced on X by Nick Turley, the Vice President and Head of ChatGPT at OpenAI.
In addition to the localized billing, the update also enables UPI payments for all subscription tiers. This is a crucial step, as UPI is the most widely used digital payment system in India. The new pricing structure for Indian users is as follows: the ChatGPT Go plan is priced at Rs. 399 per month, ChatGPT Plus at Rs. 1,999 per month, and the ChatGPT Pro plan at Rs. 19,900 per month.
The shift away from US dollar billing is designed to eliminate the additional conversion charges that Indian users previously had to pay. This change, combined with the convenience of UPI, is expected to make OpenAI’s services far more seamless and affordable for millions of potential subscribers across the country.
A notable feature of this rollout is the introduction of a new "ChatGPT Go" plan, which has been designed exclusively for Indian users. This plan offers a significant upgrade from the free tier, providing users with a 10x higher message limit, 10x more image generations, and 10x more file uploads. The memory capacity is also doubled, allowing for more extended and personalized interactions.
The strategic importance of the Indian market for OpenAI is underscored by this decision. India has rapidly emerged as one of the fastest-growing markets for ChatGPT. The company’s move to localize its pricing and payment options is a clear indication of its focus on tapping into India’s burgeoning digital ecosystem and expanding its user base.
The announcement aligns with previous statements from OpenAI's leadership. To recall, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had publicly stated that India is one of the key markets for the company. This latest development is a tangible step towards fulfilling that vision and solidifying ChatGPT's presence in the country.
