A constable of the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) was killed on Monday after stepping on an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Naxalites in Bijapur district. The incident occurred during a security patrol for ongoing road construction work between Toynar and Farsegarh villages.
The deceased has been identified as 26-year-old Manoj Pujari, a member of the CAF’s 19th battalion. While patrolling the area, he inadvertently triggered the hidden explosive, resulting in a fatal blast. Security forces were ensuring safe passage for workers engaged in the crucial road construction project when the tragedy struck.
Following the explosion, a search operation was launched in the surrounding areas to trace any potential threats or suspects. Authorities remain vigilant, as Maoists frequently target road construction activities by planting IEDs along dirt tracks and forest paths in the Bastar region.
The incident is part of a worrying pattern of violence in Bijapur and other districts in Bastar. Earlier this month, a CRPF jawan was injured in a similar blast in Bijapur, and civilians have also suffered casualties in recent weeks due to IEDs laid by Maoists.
Security forces have been stepping up operations to counter such threats, recognizing the strategic importance of improved connectivity in these interior regions. Meanwhile, construction efforts continue under tight security, despite the persistent danger posed by insurgent activity.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to completing development projects and combating the Naxalite threat, while paying tribute to the sacrifices of security personnel like Constable Manoj Pujari.
