Class 10 student dies of electrocution while trying to escape hostel in Gangarampur

A Class 10 student died after allegedly being electrocuted while attempting to escape from a hostel in the Jahangirpur area of Gangarampur in South Dinajpur district, triggering tension and outrage. The incident took place late Monday night inside a residential hostel of a private madrasa, where the student reportedly came into contact with a high-voltage wire near the toilet area.

The deceased has been identified as Jamis Albaks Hossain, a 14-year-old resident of Ramchandrapur in Tapan. According to preliminary findings, the student went to the toilet after dinner and later attempted to exit the hostel through a ventilator opening. It is suspected that during this attempt, he touched an overhead electric wire carrying high voltage, leading to fatal electrocution before falling outside the building.

Police reached the spot soon after being informed and recovered the body, which was later sent to Balurghat District Hospital for post-mortem examination. Officers have begun an investigation to determine the exact sequence of events, including why the student tried to escape and whether there were any underlying issues or circumstances inside the hostel.

Family members have raised serious allegations against the hostel authorities, claiming they were informed about the incident much later and that the student was not taken to the hospital in time. They said they received a call around 2 AM and, upon reaching the hostel, found their son lying dead. The allegations have intensified questions regarding the handling of the situation by the hostel management.

Police officials said multiple aspects are being examined, including possible negligence and safety lapses, particularly the presence of a high-voltage wire near the hostel structure. While no formal complaint had been lodged as of Tuesday afternoon, authorities stated that appropriate legal action would follow once a complaint is filed. The post-mortem report is awaited to confirm the precise cause of death.
