CM Mamata to visit Darjeeling ahead of bypolls, key GTA meeting on cards
In a tragic incident on Mahalaya morning, a class 9 student, Soumya Sheel, was crushed to death by a JCB near Dinesh Nagar Autostand, under Ward No. 113 of Bansdroni police station. Soumya, a student of Gangapuri Shiksha Sadan School, had gone out for his regular tuition when the accident occurred. His father, a rickshaw driver, is devastated by the loss of his young son. The incident has left the entire Bansdroni neighborhood in shock and grief.
According to eyewitnesses, Soumya was standing near a coconut tree with his bicycle when a JCB, operating for road repairs, lost control and struck him. The impact caused him to fall, and the machine crushed him on the spot. Despite immediate efforts by the local residents to rescue him, Soumya was declared dead after being rushed to Bangur Hospital. The blood-soaked scene has left the community shaken.
The accident has sparked outrage among the local residents, who have long complained about the poor condition of the roads in the area. Despite repeated complaints to the authorities, no action had been taken until recently, when road repair work finally began. However, the construction materials scattered around, including soil and stone chips, have created dangerous conditions for both pedestrians and vehicles, contributing to this fatal incident.
In the aftermath, angry locals vandalized the JCB and demanded accountability from the authorities. They also expressed frustration at the slow response from the police, who allegedly arrived one and a half hours after the accident. No representative from the mayor’s office visited the scene, further fueling the public's anger. Protests broke out, with residents shouting slogans and demanding justice for the tragic loss of the teenager.
