Climate activist Greta Thunberg 'tortured' by Israeli forces in detention

A significant controversy has erupted following the deportation of 137 international activists from Israel to Istanbul after their participation in an aid flotilla intercepted while attempting to reach Gaza. The controversy centers on shocking claims of mistreatment and abuse during their detention, with particularly disturbing allegations leveled regarding the treatment of renowned Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg. The deported activists, who arrived in Turkey on Saturday, have provided graphic accounts of their experience, painting a grim picture of their custody under Israeli forces, which Israel has vehemently denied.

Among the deported individuals were 36 Turkish nationals, alongside citizens from a diverse group of countries including the US, UAE, Algeria, Morocco, Italy, Kuwait, Libya, Malaysia, Mauritania, Switzerland, Tunisia, and Jordan. These individuals were part of a larger group of over 450 activists detained when the Israeli military intercepted the vessels attempting to break the naval blockade of Gaza.

Two activists, Malaysian national Hazwani Helmi and American citizen Windfield Beaver, stated that they personally witnessed the alleged mistreatment of the high-profile Swedish campaigner. Helmi, 28, described the entire experience as "a disaster," claiming authorities "treated us like animals." The most serious allegation regarding Thunberg is that she was shoved and forced to wear an Israeli flag against her will. This claim of psychological humiliation and use for propaganda purposes has sparked outrage among supporters.

Beyond the mistreatment of Thunberg, the activists reported deplorable overall detention conditions. Helmi and others alleged that detainees were denied access to clean food and water, and that their personal belongings and vital medicines were confiscated by Israeli forces. Furthermore, an email from the Swedish foreign ministry to Thunberg's associates, citing an official visit, reported Thunberg describing her cell as bedbug-infested and lacking sufficient food and water, resulting in dehydration and skin rashes.

Other activists echoed the claims of systematic abuse and torture. Italian regional councillor Paolo Romano detailed the psychological and physical violence they allegedly endured: "They forced us to kneel, face down. If we moved, they hit us. They laughed, insulted, and beat us." A Turkish activist further alleged that Thunberg was "dragged by her hair before our eyes, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag," claiming she was "wrapped in the Israeli flag and paraded like a trophy."

In response to the mounting international condemnation and the specific allegations made by the deported activists, Israel's Foreign Ministry has categorically dismissed all claims as "complete lies." A spokesperson asserted that all detainees were treated according to the law, provided with food, water, restrooms, and access to legal counsel, and that their legal rights were fully upheld. The contrasting narratives of harsh abuse versus lawful treatment underscore the deeply contentious nature of the interception and detention.
