Closure of public toilets in Howrah and Digha Bus stands creates inconvenience amidst Trinamool infighting

In a distressing development, all available public toilets in the Howrah and Digha bus stand areas have remained closed for the past four days, causing significant inconvenience to the public.

The closure has been attributed to infighting within the Trinamool Congress party, with allegations of financial irregularities and mismanagement surrounding the operation of these essential facilities.

The Howrah and Digha bus stands, known for their high footfall, serve as crucial transit points for thousands of people on a daily basis. However, due to the closure of toilets, commuters, bus drivers, porters, and local shopkeepers have been grappling with the absence of proper sanitation facilities, resulting in mounting concerns over hygiene and cleanliness.

The dispute surrounding the closure revolves around financial improprieties allegedly committed within the Trinamool Congress party. North Howrah MLA Gautam Chowdhary has come under direct scrutiny, as it is claimed that he played a role in the mismanagement of funds intended for the maintenance and functioning of the public toilets. While Chowdhary has acknowledged taking charge of the toilets from former councilor Lakshmi Sahni, he has refrained from filing a formal complaint against Sahni.

The closure has left thousands of individuals, including long-distance travelers and locals, with limited options for relieving themselves. Consequently, the lack of available toilets has led to unhygienic practices, causing the surrounding areas to become littered with waste.

In response to the mounting concerns, the Howrah Municipality has stated that no official complaints have been lodged regarding the closure of the public toilets. However, they have assured the public that they are actively investigating the matter and are committed to rectifying the situation promptly.
