Cloudburst in Sikkim triggers flood threat in North Bengal: puts vital highway link at risk

Heavy rains in North Bengal, triggered by a cloudburst in Sikkim, have led to the Teesta River overflowing and inundating parts of Jalpaiguri. The rising waters have also encroached upon a section of National Highway No. 10, a vital link between Sikkim, Bengal, and the rest of India. This situation has raised concerns about the potential for widespread flooding across North Bengal, including Jalpaiguri district.

CM Mamata Banerjee swiftly responded by instructing officials to assess the situation and ensure residents' safety. Evacuation measures are underway in low-lying areas of Kalimpong, Darjeeling, and Jalpaiguri. Senior government ministers and IAS officers have been dispatched to oversee the emergency response efforts. The situation remains dynamic, with a focus on mitigating the impact of the Teesta River's swelling waters on local communities and essential transportation routes.
