CM Mamata announces ₹5 lakh compensation, job for flood victims' kin

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has officially confirmed that the recent catastrophic floods and landslides in North Bengal have claimed 23 lives and has immediately moved to announce a comprehensive package of relief and rehabilitation for the bereaved families. Speaking on the ongoing crisis, the Chief Minister underscored the state's priority in ensuring the safety of those affected, particularly stranded tourists, while simultaneously addressing the long-term needs of families who have suffered irreparable loss during this natural disaster.

In a key announcement, the Chief Minister stated that the families of the 23 individuals who lost their lives will be provided with a substantial financial aid of ₹5 lakh as compensation. However, the fatalities are higher as per reports. This immediate monetary relief is intended to help the families cope with the sudden and tragic loss and navigate the immediate financial difficulties caused by the disaster. The government is rapidly mobilizing resources to ensure these funds reach the beneficiaries without delay.

Beyond financial aid, the government has focused on securing the future of the affected households. CM Banerjee announced that one member from each deceased family will be offered a government job under the Special Home Guard category. This crucial measure aims to provide a stable livelihood to the families, ensuring that the loss of a loved one does not often lead to a parallel economic collapse.

The state’s immediate focus on rescuing stranded visitors has shown considerable success. The Chief Minister confirmed that a swift evacuation process was implemented, resulting in the safe return of 250 tourists to Siliguri just yesterday. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the operation has been significantly scaled up, with 45 more buses being deployed today to bring back the remaining tourists from the disaster-hit areas.
