The Jagannath Mandir in Digha, Purba Medinipur, is scheduled to be inaugurated on April 29, by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The temple, which began construction in May 2022, is being developed on a 22-acre plot at an estimated cost of over ₹150 crore. The temple will feature idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra, with the structure designed to accommodate large numbers of devotees and visitors.
This project is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing the tourism infrastructure of the Digha region, which is one of the most popular beach destinations in West Bengal. The temple will serve as a major religious and cultural attraction, drawing both domestic and international tourists. The temple’s design includes facilities for visitors, including open spaces and pathways designed to manage large crowds.
The new temple is anticipated to significantly impact the local economy. Small businesses, including those in hospitality, retail, and transportation, are expected to benefit from an increase in tourist footfall. The government has also undertaken infrastructure improvements in the surrounding areas to support the expected rise in visitors. This includes better road access, parking facilities, and improvements in local amenities to accommodate the influx of tourists.
Once complete, the Jagannath Mandir is expected to become an iconic landmark not just for Bengal, but for the broader region. The temple’s opening is part of a broader effort by the state government to enhance religious tourism in the region, alongside other development projects aimed at fostering economic growth in Purba Medinipur.
