West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday called for collective vigilance and unity as India marked its 77th Republic Day, underscoring the importance of safeguarding constitutional values. The chief minister said the Constitution is the foundation of India’s democracy and must be protected against any attempt to weaken its principles. She urged people to remain alert and conscious of their rights and duties, stating that constitutional values ensure equality, justice and freedom for all sections of society.
Banerjee emphasised that Republic Day is not only a celebration of the adoption of the Constitution but also a reminder of shared responsibility. She noted that vigilance and unity among citizens are essential to maintain social harmony and strengthen democratic institutions. Referring to India’s diversity, the West Bengal chief minister stressed the need to respect pluralism and inclusivity, saying these ideals form the core of the constitutional framework. She appealed to people to reject divisive forces and work together for the nation’s progress.
The message was part of Republic Day observances across the state, where tributes were paid to freedom fighters and the makers of the Constitution. Banerjee concluded by reaffirming her commitment to constitutional values and urging citizens to remain united in defending democracy.
