CM Mamata calls BJP ‘party of thieves and brokers’, accuses them of trying to disrupt dharna

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleging that it has “become a party of thieves and brokers” and is attempting to disrupt Trinamool Congress’s ongoing protest at Dharmatala in Kolkata.

The dharna led by the Trinamool Congress supremo entered its fourth consecutive day on Monday. The protest was launched against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and has intensified the political atmosphere in West Bengal, drawing large gatherings of party leaders, workers and supporters at the central Kolkata site.

Speaking from the protest stage, Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of being afraid of democratic movements and claimed that the party was trying to weaken the agitation through deliberate provocation. She said the Trinamool Congress movement was peaceful and democratic and aimed at protecting the rights of people.

Tension briefly escalated near the protest venue on Monday morning after BJP supporters allegedly distributed leaflets promoting the ‘Parivartan Yatra’ close to the dharna site. Trinamool Congress workers objected to the distribution of the pamphlets, claiming it was an attempt to disturb the atmosphere of the protest.

Following the incident, Mamata Banerjee instructed police officials from the stage to take strict action. Acting on the directive, police detained two BJP workers who were reportedly distributing the leaflets and began the process of registering a case to maintain law and order in the area.

The Dharmatala protest has now emerged as a major political focal point in the state. From the stage, Mamata Banerjee has repeatedly criticised the BJP and the central government, while Trinamool Congress leaders describe the agitation as a movement to protect democracy and people’s rights.
