Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a trade conference in North Bengal on Monday, where she highlighted Bengal’s rapid industrial development and investor interest in the state. During the event, she inaugurated the skywalk at the Jalpaiguri temple and officially opened four new industrial parks in the region. Additionally, she announced plans for constructing a new convention center in Siliguri aimed at supporting business activities.
Banerjee emphasized the growing importance of North Bengal in the state’s industrial strategy and called for increased focus on small and cottage industries, tourism, food processing, and the tea sector. She also proposed establishing an industrial park in Cooch Behar to further boost local industry. The Chief Minister assured investors of government support and committed to significant financial investments in the region.
To facilitate smoother industrial growth and address any operational challenges, Mamata Banerjee directed Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to form a core committee consisting of selected industrialists. This committee is tasked with ensuring that the business environment in North Bengal remains investor-friendly and free of obstacles.
Banerjee noted improvements in regional connectivity and infrastructure, citing that the area previously had one flight every other day but now expects 50 to 60 daily flights. She also mentioned the development of five five-star hotels in Siliguri as part of ongoing projects to enhance the region’s economic potential.
At the event, industrialist Harshavardhan Neotia announced a ₹15,000 crore investment plan for North Bengal over the next five years. Neotia shared his two-decade-long experience in the region, including projects like Uttarayan and a hospital, and expressed plans for a hotel at the Makaibari tea estate. Banerjee’s focus on varied sectors aims to create a diversified industrial base in North Bengal.
