Big tree falls at CR Avenue blocking traffic, roads waterlogged after heavy rain
Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee has shifted into high gear ahead of the West Bengal polls, holding a series of internal strategy meetings at her Kalighat residence. Sources close to the party's top brass indicate that the TMC is likely to release its comprehensive list of candidates for all 294 Assembly seats between Tuesday and Wednesday. The 2026 list is expected to reflect a significant "generational shift," with a focus on youth leaders and performance-based selections to counter the evolving political challenges in the state.
The core of the new strategy appears to be a massive "cleanup" of the existing legislative body. According to insiders, the party is considering dropping nearly two dozen sitting MLAs due to anti-incumbency factors and reports from internal surveys. To maintain experience in the house while refreshing the face of the party, Mamata Banerjee is reportedly weighing a proposal to shift 4-5 "established" veteran MLAs to different, more strategic constituencies. This "musical chairs" approach aims to leverage their influence in tougher terrains while allowing new talent to take root in their original strongholds.
Younger faces who have been active on the ground and in the media are set to be the highlights of this year’s nomination list. Names like Debangshu Bhattacharya, Pratik Ur, Ritabrata Banerjee, and Trinankur Bhattacharya are almost certain to get tickets, signaling the party’s intent to groom its next generation of leadership. These leaders, who have been vocal in the party’s "Boycott BJP" and "Janchaito" (people's protest) campaigns, are expected to be fielded from key urban and suburban battlegrounds to mobilize the youth vote.
