CM Mamata orders BDOs to visit villages weekly for direct interaction with people to ensure transparency

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has issued a directive requiring Block Development Officers (BDOs) to visit villages once a week, ensuring direct engagement with the local population. The move aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and the delivery of government services. This instruction, announced during her North Bengal visit, is a key initiative in her broader efforts to improve the functioning of local governance and address public concerns effectively at the grassroots level.

The Chief Minister clarified that the directive applies not only to BDOs but also to all government officials and public representatives, urging them to connect with citizens more frequently. She emphasized that government officials must ensure that people are receiving the services they are entitled to, with a particular focus on resolving issues directly in communities. This directive is part of the state government's ongoing push to make public administration more accessible and responsive.

On the financial front, Mamata also addressed the issue of central government funding, noting that the Centre has withheld approximately ₹1.65 lakh crore from the state. Despite these financial constraints, the Chief Minister assured the public that key welfare schemes, including Kanyashree (a scheme for the education of girls) and Swasthya Sathi (a health insurance program), would continue as planned. The West Bengal government has committed to ensuring the continuity of these vital programs, despite the financial shortfall.

This initiative comes as part of the state’s broader strategy to increase the accessibility of government services, particularly in rural areas. By encouraging direct communication between officials and the public, the government aims to address concerns about service delivery and improve the efficiency of welfare schemes. The focus is on ensuring that government programs reach the people they are intended to serve, with special attention to addressing the challenges faced by rural communities in accessing these services.
