CM Mamata orders CID probe into fake saline case

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered a CID investigation into the fake saline incident at Medinipur Medical College following reports that several children were harmed after being administered contaminated saline. The incident has raised concerns regarding the safety and quality control of medical supplies in the state. Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam and Chief Secretary Manoj Pant convened an emergency meeting to address the situation and discuss the steps taken so far. The meeting also involved addressing the lapses in handling the case, with Pant expressing dissatisfaction over the management of the issue.

The saline involved in the incident had been flagged due to concerns about its quality. Chief Secretary Pant confirmed that production from the supplying company was halted when the issue was detected. However, the saline from the affected batch had already been distributed to hospitals, including Medinipur Medical College, where the adverse effects were observed. Health officials assured that the children’s condition is stable and that they are being closely monitored. Continuous updates on their health are being provided, and no new critical cases have been reported.

On January 11, a team of 13 specialists was dispatched to Medinipur Medical College to conduct an in-depth investigation. Preliminary findings from the team indicated negligence in handling the saline administration. According to reports, the medical team involved in the case consisted of training doctors who were operating without adequate supervision from senior doctors. The investigation has raised questions regarding the adherence to protocols, particularly the involvement of unqualified staff in critical care situations. The state government has emphasized that such lapses will be thoroughly examined.

Chief Secretary Pant further stated that the CID investigation will look into the involvement of the company that supplied the contaminated saline and whether there were violations of medical safety and manufacturing standards. The probe will also focus on the role of health workers involved in the incident and whether proper procedures were followed in the distribution and administration of the saline. The CID will gather evidence to assess the extent of negligence, and a full report is expected in the coming days.

The state government has also taken steps to ensure that similar incidents do not recur. Health officials have instructed that all saline supplies be thoroughly tested for quality before distribution, and tighter monitoring systems are being implemented across medical institutions. The Chief Minister has made it clear that strict actions will be taken against those found responsible once the full investigation report is submitted. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely and will take further steps as necessary to ensure patient safety and accountability in healthcare practices.
