CM Mamata resigns from 23 government offices and boards ahead of state elections

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has officially resigned from 23 government offices and various administrative positions she held across multiple departments. This significant move, announced on Tuesday, comes just weeks before the high-stakes 2026 Assembly elections. The state’s Home Department issued a formal communication directing all relevant government counterparts to immediately initiate the process of accepting her resignation from these listed posts, as well as any other unlisted positions she might currently occupy.

The resignation covers a vast array of influential roles, ranging from the head of the State Health Mission to the chairperson of the State Wildlife Board and the Ecotourism Advisory Board. She has also stepped down from the leadership of the State Industrial Investment Promotion Board and the State Disaster Management Authority. Even cultural and social bodies, such as the governing body of the West Bengal Urdu Academy and the organizing committee of the Bangla Sangeet Mela, were included in her extensive list of relinquishments.

This administrative withdrawal is being viewed as a strategic step to avoid any potential "office of profit" controversies or legal hurdles as she prepares for a fierce electoral contest in the Bhabanipur seat. In this high-profile South Kolkata constituency, she is set to face a direct challenge from the state’s Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari. By stepping down from these 23 roles, Banerjee is clearing the path for a focused campaign, ensuring that her administrative ties do not conflict with the rigorous norms of the Model Code of Conduct.
