Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has rescheduled her planned visit to Murshidabad, shifting it from 5th May to 6th May. The visit, initially set to take place on 5th May, will now focus on meeting the families affected by the recent violence in Shamsherganj, where unrest erupted earlier this month. The Chief Minister is expected to meet with the victims and hear their grievances directly.
During her visit, Banerjee will also attend an administrative meeting at the Sutti’s Chabghati KD Vidyalaya Ground. The meeting will address the ongoing situation in the region and focus on government schemes aimed at providing relief to the violence-affected families. As part of the visit, financial assistance will be offered to the family of Ejaz Ahmed, who was killed in the violence, though no official government statement has been made yet regarding the specifics of the aid.
The violence in Murshidabad stemmed from the newly amended Waqf law and led to significant destruction, including damage to homes, shops, and police vehicles. Many residents were displaced, and the incident sparked public outrage. The delay in the Chief Minister’s visit drew criticism, especially from opposition parties, who called for immediate intervention. Banerjee, however, had previously stated that she would visit at the right time when the situation warranted it.
In preparation for her visit, the local administration has stepped up security measures. Authorities are ensuring that all arrangements are in place for a smooth and secure visit. The government's focus is on providing aid and addressing the needs of the victims while ensuring the situation remains stable during the Chief Minister's time in the district.
