West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised strong objections to a new directive issued by the Election Commission, requiring individuals born between July 1, 1987 and 2004 to fill out a declaration form to remain on the voter list. As per the directive, applicants must also submit their parents’ birth certificates. Banerjee questioned the feasibility of this requirement and said, “I don’t know the birth date of my parents; I only know their death dates.”
She said the same letter regarding the voter declaration form was sent to Patna and received by them as well. According to her, the move affects a large section of the population and places unreasonable documentation burdens on citizens. Banerjee expressed concern, asking, “Where will people get their parents’ birth certificates?” and questioned the basis of this instruction.
Mamata Banerjee accused the Election Commission of functioning without consulting opposition parties and alleged that the directive targets Bengal. She said, “The Election Commission is working at the behest of the BJP.” She questioned the intent behind the decision, asking, “Is this the NRC?” and demanded to know the Prime Minister’s date of birth, stating, “When was Modi born?” Banerjee called the directive a “scam” and described it as dangerous for the democratic process.
