Chief Minister Nitish Kumar hoisted the national flag at Gandhi Maidan on the occasion of Independence Day, saluting the Tricolour in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, senior officials, and the public. In his address, Nitish paid tribute to freedom fighters and said the people of Bihar had contributed significantly to the nation’s development. He outlined the government’s work in improving law and order, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and employment.
Nitish stated that after his government took office in 2005, incidents of murder, robbery, and kidnapping declined. He said law and order had improved, enabling people to travel without fear. On education, he spoke about the recruitment of teachers through the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC), expansion of schools, and schemes such as free bicycles and uniforms. He said girl students receive ₹25,000 on passing Class 12 and ₹50,000 on graduation.
In healthcare, Nitish said seven new medical colleges are under construction in different districts and free treatment facilities are available in government hospitals. He also mentioned the development of roads and bridges, stating that improved road connectivity allows travel from remote areas to Patna within five hours. He said every household has been provided electricity and toilets.
Announcing a major decision for job aspirants, Nitish said candidates appearing for preliminary tests (PT) for state government jobs conducted by all commissions, including BPSC, Bihar Staff Selection Commission, Bihar Technical Service Commission, Bihar Police Subordinate Service Commission, and Central Constable Selection Board, will now pay only ₹100 as the exam fee. He said those qualifying for the mains examination will not have to pay any fee.
The Chief Minister also announced three other initiatives: providing one crore jobs and employment opportunities in the next five years, running large numbers of state-run buses for people returning to Bihar during Diwali, Chhath, and Holi, and doubling subsidies to encourage new industries in the state. He also confirmed that new medical colleges will be set up in Kishanganj, Katihar, Rohtas, Sheohar, Lakhisarai, and Arwal districts.
Nitish said these measures are aimed at improving opportunities for youth, strengthening healthcare and infrastructure, and supporting economic development through industry promotion. He concluded his address by reiterating the state government’s focus on continuing development work across all sectors in Bihar.
