Cold wave grips Delhi as minimum temperature drops to around 3 degrees

Delhi shivered through a freezing Monday morning as the minimum temperature dipped to around 3℃, marking the coldest January day since 2023, reports say. Safdarjung Observatory recorded 3.2℃, Palam logged 3.3℃, Lodhi Road 3℃, Ridge 4.2℃, and Ayanagar 3.2℃. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 19℃.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted that cold wave conditions would persist over the national capital on January 12 and 13, with isolated pockets experiencing similar chills on the 14th. Surface winds blew predominantly from the west at speeds of 10–15 km/h, contributing to the sustained cold, while fog and haze reduced visibility across several areas.

Delhi’s air quality remained poor, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 298. Around 20 monitoring stations recorded ‘very poor’ air quality, with Nehru Nagar topping the list at 344 AQI. Authorities warned that dense fog could exacerbate respiratory issues, especially for people with asthma, bronchitis, or other lung conditions.

The IMD expects minimum temperatures to remain 3–5℃ below normal in most parts, with maximum temperatures slightly below normal. On January 14, conditions are expected to improve marginally, with daytime highs ranging between 19–21℃ and lows between 3–5℃. Winds are likely to remain light, shifting from west to northwest during the day.

Health advisories emphasized limiting outdoor activities and wearing protective masks. Pollutants carried by dense fog can irritate eyes and lungs, potentially triggering wheezing, coughing, or shortness of breath. Citizens are advised to take precautions while commuting or exercising outdoors during this cold spell.
