College student dies at Joka ESI hospital, family alleges negligence in treatment

An 18-year-old student of Sarshuna College, Kushal Sarkar, tragically passed away on Friday, with his family alleging medical negligence at Joka ESI Hospital. The incident has sparked protests and demands for accountability from the hospital authorities.

Kushal, a known thalassemia patient, reportedly visited Joka ESI Hospital around 6 PM on Thursday, complaining of breathing difficulties. He was discharged after receiving what the family described as "primary treatment." However, early on Friday at 5 AM, Kushal's condition worsened, and he was rushed back to the same hospital.

According to his family, despite being given oxygen, Kushal did not receive adequate medical attention. The hospital allegedly asked them to arrange for two units of blood, but the family claims that no blood transfusion or additional treatment was provided. Kushal passed away at 4 PM, leaving his grieving family questioning the quality of care he received.

We repeatedly asked the hospital staff to start proper treatment, but they only gave him oxygen and nothing else. No blood was administered,” said a family member.

Following Kushal's death, his family and residents gathered at the hospital to protest, accusing the medical staff of negligence that led to the young student’s demise. Police from Thakur Pukur Police Station arrived at the scene to manage the situation and prevent further escalation.
