Complaint filed against MLA Tapas Chatterjee for allegedly targeting Muslims in public meeting

A major controversy has erupted in West Bengal after a written complaint was filed against Rajarhat New Town MLA Tapas Chatterjee for allegedly making offensive remarks about the Muslim community during a public meeting. The complaint was submitted to the Bidhannagar Police Commissioner on Saturday, seeking strict legal action.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred on the night of April 4 at around 9 PM during a meeting held at Narayanpur, under Ward No. 3 of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. Tapas Chatterjee is accused of making derogatory comments while addressing the gathering, allegedly saying that “some Muslims grow beards in the name of Islam, but those beards are not the beards of Muslims, they are the beards of infidels.”

The remarks, now at the center of political and communal scrutiny, have sparked outrage among various sections of society, particularly among members of the minority Muslim community. Several activists and local leaders have condemned the statement, calling it deeply offensive and capable of inciting hatred.

Legal experts believe that if verified, the comments may violate provisions of the Indian Penal Code related to hate speech and promoting enmity between different communities. The complainant has urged the police to file an FIR and initiate an investigation without delay.

Meanwhile, opposition parties have seized the opportunity to demand Tapas Chatterjee’s resignation and have accused the ruling party of encouraging divisive rhetoric. The matter is also gaining traction on social media, where videos from the meeting are being circulated widely, though their authenticity is yet to be confirmed by officials.

As of now, there has been no official response from Tapas Chatterjee or his office regarding the allegations. Police officials have stated that they are examining the complaint and verifying the available footage before taking further steps.
