In a shocking turn of events at the Calcutta High Court, Trinamool MP and senior lawyer Kalyan Banerjee has been accused of physically assaulting a fellow lawyer, Ashok Kumar Nath, following a heated exchange over comments made about another party MP, Saugat Roy. The incident occurred on Thursday morning around 11 am during proceedings in the division bench of Justices Tapobrata Chakraborty and Ritabrata Kumar Mitra.
According to the complaint filed by lawyer Ashok Nath at the Hare Street police station, Kalyan Banerjee was making harsh and objectionable comments about his own party's Dum Dum MP, Saugat Roy, during the hearing. Nath, disturbed by the remarks, reportedly asked Banerjee to refrain from such comments, citing the inappropriateness of making such statements in the court. The situation quickly escalated, with Banerjee allegedly grabbing Nath by the collar and striking him in the face.
Witnesses present in the packed courtroom were stunned by the sudden outburst, which disrupted proceedings and raised concerns about the conduct of elected representatives within the judiciary. Nath, visibly shaken, later filed the complaint against Banerjee for harassment, abuse, and physical assault.
The incident has now sparked a debate about decorum within the legal profession and the conduct of public figures, especially MPs who hold dual roles as lawyers. Legal experts have expressed shock at the event, stressing the importance of maintaining professionalism, especially in a courtroom setting. The complaint has been registered, and the police are investigating the matter further.
