Amidst ongoing violence in the campaign for the West Bengal Panchayat elections, a Congress candidate in Murshidabad had a close call with gunfire on Sunday night.
Anarul Haque, the candidate for Zilla Parishad from ward number four, narrowly escaped the shooting, but one of his accompanying party workers was struck by a bullet. The injured worker has been admitted to a private hospital in Dhuliyan and is in critical condition.
According to reports, Haque was returning from a campaign when Trinamool MLA Amirul Islam arrived in a car and allegedly fired shots, targeting the Congress candidate.
Following the incident, Congress workers staged a protest, demanding the arrest of the MLA. Haque stated that the Trinamool MLA shot at him but ended up hitting their party worker.
The Trinamool MLA, on the other hand, alleges that it was the Congress candidate who fired the shots. The police have filed an FIR in connection with the incident.
