A building under construction at 119 Mukhtaram Babu Street in Burrabazar collapsed on Sunday, leading to significant concerns over illegal construction practices in the area. A letter, written on February 18 by Uttam Sonkar, the president of Ward 25, was submitted to the Mayor and other relevant authorities, highlighting issues related to the building’s illegal construction. Despite this, no action was taken to address the concerns, and the collapse occurred days later.
The opposition has raised serious objections to the lack of response from the corporation. Santosh Pathak, Congress councilor of Ward 45, criticized the corporation for ignoring the letter and the warnings about the illegal construction. He emphasized that had the authorities acted on the complaints, the incident could have been prevented.
In the aftermath of the collapse, Pathak called for the arrest of the promoter responsible for the illegal construction. Local leaders and residents are now urging the authorities to take immediate action and address the concerns about safety violations and illegal building practices to prevent further accidents.
