A fresh wave of protests erupted across West Bengal following the Supreme Court's order that led to the termination of nearly 26,000 teachers recruited through the SSC (School Service Commission). The aftermath of the verdict has ignited unrest, with terminated teachers and education staff hitting the streets in large numbers, expressing anger and anguish. Many DI (District Inspector of Schools) offices have become focal points of these protests.
On Friday, chaos unfolded outside the DI office in Burdwan as the Congress party, in response to alleged police brutality during the earlier Kasba incident, organized a protest. Protesters claim that teachers were manhandled during the Kasba agitation, and their voices are being silenced despite their legitimate demands. Simultaneously, there are reports that some agitators used provocative language, which has further heated the political discourse.
Around 3 PM, the Congress protest began with district party leader Gaurav Samaddar leading a crowd of supporters toward the Burdwan DI office. Their stated goal was to “lock” the office as a mark of protest. However, tension brewed quickly when the police stopped the crowd at the gate. The situation was made even more volatile by a Trinamool Congress event taking place nearby at Karzon Gate, prompting the deployment of heavy police security in the area.
When police attempted to prevent the Congress workers from reaching the office gate, scuffles broke out. A section of the protesters reportedly turned aggressive, leading to a brief but intense confrontation with law enforcement. Police ultimately succeeded in dispersing the protestors and regaining control of the situation. No arrests were reported, but the events have further fueled political confrontations.
