Contai Municipality sets deadline to remove encroachers from government land

Contai Municipality has issued a notice directing the removal of encroachments from government land as part of a large-scale initiative to reclaim public spaces across the town and subdivision. The notice was issued on May 27, and authorities have already begun public announcements through loudspeakers in various areas. Municipal and subdivision officials have simultaneously started identifying government land currently under occupation. According to the administration, the clearance process is expected to cover government land across different parts of the town and subdivision within the next six months through a phased approach.

Administrative sources stated that priority has been given to government land located on both sides of the road in front of the Contai Sub-Divisional Officer's Office and Contai Police Station. Officials said the clearance operation is being undertaken with a focus on security considerations and reducing traffic congestion in key administrative areas. Preparations are also underway to upgrade the Irrigation Department bungalow near the police station for use as an office for the Chief Minister.

As part of the preparatory process, a meeting was held on Friday evening with representatives of hawkers' unions, local organizations, and political parties. The discussion focused on the proposed anti-encroachment operation and its implementation. According to administrative sources, a district-level inspection team is expected to visit Contai within the next few days to assess the situation before the operation formally begins.

The administration has announced that a public awareness campaign will commence across the town from Sunday. Shop owners have been instructed to remove goods kept on roads and footpaths, demolish any unauthorized shop extensions, and dispose of waste only in designated dustbins. Officials said these measures are intended to support the broader effort to free public spaces from obstructions.

Sub-divisional administration sources indicated that the campaign will not be confined to Contai alone. Similar anti-encroachment operations are planned in Digha, Ramnagar, and Khejuri. Authorities stated that the initiative is aimed at reclaiming government land and addressing issues related to traffic movement and public safety across the region.
