5,000 Pakistani soldiers resign amid fear of Indian retaliation
A 14-wheeler container carrying stones overturned near Nabanna at Mandirtala early Tuesday morning, blocking the Kolkata-bound lane for nearly five hours. According to police reports, the container was traveling from Howrah’s Shalimar to Liluah via Vidyasagar Setu when it lost control and rolled backward while turning near Mandirtala. The accident obstructed the entire approach road to Vidyasagar Setu, forcing a complete shutdown of traffic from Kolkata and the Kona Expressway. School students, office-goers, and daily commuters faced severe delays as traffic police worked to remove the vehicle.
Authorities confirmed that the driver had parked the truck near a bus stand and stepped out before the accident occurred. Initial findings suggest mechanical failure or improper parking may have caused the container to roll back. Shibpur police deployed cranes to clear the route, but initial attempts were unsuccessful. A larger crane was brought in around 9:30 AM, and after five hours of disruption, normal traffic resumed. No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.
In a separate incident, a major accident occurred near Bamni Bridge in Dhupguri on Monday night when two trucks collided head-on while overtaking. A third truck crashed into the stationary vehicle, trapping the driver inside. Rescue teams worked for nearly an hour to free him. Three people sustained injuries in the accident. Police are investigating both incidents, and traffic restrictions on heavy vehicles are under review.
