A health incident occurred in Chanchal Bazar when Saddam Hossain (32), a resident of Nayatola, experienced severe illness after drinking bottled water purchased from a local shop. On the morning of the incident, Hossain bought a 500-milliliter bottle of water from a local store for 10 taka. Shortly after consumption, he began experiencing sharp stomach pain and repeated vomiting. Hossain sought medical attention at Chanchal Super Specialty Hospital, where he received initial treatment.
After returning to the shop, Hossain inspected another bottle from the same company and found white fungus-like particles floating inside. Concerned, he checked additional bottles of the same brand in the shop, and all displayed similar contamination, confirming a potential issue with the product. The shopkeeper, however, did not offer any explanation or comment regarding the contaminated water.
The company producing the bottled water has a widespread market presence across the Chanchal region. Despite the contamination concerns raised by the incident, there has been no official response from the Food Safety Department or any regulatory authorities. Investigations have revealed the existence of several illegal water bottling units operating in the region without proper permits or quality control. Local residents are voicing concerns over the lack of oversight, which has allowed such operations to continue without proper regulation, potentially jeopardizing public health. The Food Safety Department has yet to comment on the issue or take any apparent action.
