Disruption in metro services between Dumdum and Dakshineswar; normal services resume after 2 hours
A significant uproar ensued after the release of Nayanthara-starrer 'Annapoorani' on Netflix, with political leaders accusing the film of demeaning Lord Ram through controversial dialogues. The controversy escalated to a massive protest outside Netflix's Mumbai office by members of Vishva Hindu Parishad, demanding the removal of the film from the platform. Protesters alleged that a character in the movie suggested the actress eat meat, citing "Bhagwan Shri Ram was also a meat eater."
Videos circulating on the internet captured activists waving party flags and calling for a boycott of 'Annapoorani.' Mumbai Police intervened, detaining the activists and dispersing the crowd. In response to the outcry, Zee Studios, one of the film's producers, issued a statement vowing to edit the contentious scene and temporarily take down the film from Netflix until the necessary changes were implemented.
Netflix has subsequently removed 'Annapoorani' from its platform. Meanwhile, police complaints and an FIR have been lodged against the makers, including actors, director, and producers, by political leaders and Hindu Seva Parishad, respectively, alleging the film hurt religious sentiments and promoted love jihad.
