The Kolkata Police have successfully cracked the brutal Rajabazar murder case with the arrest of the prime suspect, Md Muslim, alias Muslim Ansari, from Giridih, Jharkhand. The incident occurred on the morning of December 22, 2025, when 41-year-old fruit vendor Mehboob Alam was stabbed to death in broad daylight at the busy Rajabazar crossing. The assailant had arrived on a scooty, carried out the vicious attack in front of dozens of onlookers, and fled the scene immediately, leaving the victim in a pool of blood.
The investigation, led by the Amherst Street Police Station and the Homicide Wing of the Detective Department, revealed a motive rooted in personal vendetta. According to police sources, the accused, Muslim Ansari, suspected that the victim, Mehboob Alam, was involved in an extramarital affair with his wife. This suspicion reportedly drove Ansari to plan and execute the murder as an act of revenge. Following the crime, Ansari had fled the city and sought refuge in his native village in Jharkhand.
In a well-coordinated operation on Sunday morning, December 28, Kolkata Police officers, with the assistance of local Jharkhand authorities, apprehended the 44-year-old accused from the Birni Police Station compound in Giridih. Alongside the arrest, the police also recovered the black scooty (WB-08A-3913) used during the crime from Ansari's village, Kapilo. A knife, believed to be the murder weapon, had already been recovered from the crime scene earlier.
Ansari is being produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Giridih today, where the police are seeking a transit remand to bring him back to Kolkata for further interrogation. The swift arrest has brought some relief to the Rajabazar business community, which was left shaken by the daylight brutality. Detectives are now looking to reconstruct the sequence of events and verify if any other individuals assisted the accused in his escape.
