A corruption case has been filed against Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in connection with the ongoing investigation into the horrific rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor on August 9. The complaint was lodged by Debal Kumar Ghosh, Senior Special Secretary of the Bengal health department.
This development follows the Bengal government's decision, under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, to establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with probing allegations of financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College from 2021 to the present, during Dr. Ghosh's tenure.
The SIT, led by Inspector General of Police Pranav Kumar, will include Waquar Reza, DIG of Murshidabad Range; Soma Das Mitra, DIG of CID; and Indira Mukherjee, DCP of Kolkata Police. The team has been directed to submit its initial findings to the Bengal government within a month.
Dr. Ghosh has been a central figure in the investigation into the trainee doctor's rape and murder due to his management of the case. He was interrogated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for several hours on Sunday, marking the fourth consecutive day of questioning.
Authorities have been scrutinizing Dr. Ghosh’s actions following the incident, including his communications after learning of the doctor's death, the delay in allowing the victim's parents to view their daughter's body, and the renovation of rooms adjacent to the seminar hall where the victim’s body was discovered in a semi-naked condition.
