India has witnessed a renewed surge in Covid-19 cases, with the number of active infections rising to 4,866 on Thursday — up from 4,302 just a day earlier. In the past 24 hours, seven Covid-related deaths were reported, including that of a 5-month-old baby and an 87-year-old person in Delhi.
The capital recorded 105 new cases in a single day, pushing its active caseload to 562. Maharashtra reported three deaths, while Karnataka recorded two fatalities, raising concerns about the virus’s spread in southern states.
Kerala currently has the highest number of active cases at 1,487, followed by West Bengal (538), Maharashtra (526), Gujarat (508), and Karnataka (436). Central health authorities have asked all states and union territories to remain vigilant and ensure the availability of oxygen, beds, and essential medicines in case of further escalation.
While no lockdowns or movement restrictions have been announced, the government continues to monitor developments closely and has urged citizens to remain cautious, especially those with underlying health conditions or compromised immunity.
