India has recorded a fresh surge in Covid-19 cases, with active infections rising to 5,755, according to Union Health Ministry data released on Sunday. In the last 24 hours alone, the country reported 391 new cases and four deaths — one each from Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
Kerala topped the daily tally with 127 new infections, followed by Gujarat (102), Delhi (73), and West Bengal (26). Only four regions — Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Mizoram, and Tripura — reported zero new cases. With the steady increase, the central government has launched mock drills nationwide to assess hospital readiness for any potential surge.
Among the recent deaths, Maharashtra reported its highest Covid toll since January with 18 fatalities in 2025. The latest victims included a stage-4 lung cancer patient in Kerala, a pregnant woman in Madhya Pradesh, a hyperthyroid patient in Maharashtra, and a bedridden diabetic in Tamil Nadu — all of whom succumbed to Covid-related complications.
Since January, over 5,400 patients have recovered, including 760 recoveries this month alone. However, the Health Ministry remains cautious, closely monitoring state-wise trends and deploying preparedness measures.
