He confirmed that the case is highly sensitive and under investigation. "A case has been registered at South Calcutta Law College. The police are investigating. The case is highly sensitive, so I can't share too many details,” he said.
The Commissioner informed that an FIR was registered promptly after the complaint was received. Within 12 hours, three accused named in the FIR were arrested. Later, based on the information obtained during the investigation, another individual was also arrested. “We have collected a lot of evidence. We are analyzing everything, and the rest of the investigative procedures are ongoing,” Verma added.
He further stated that the identity of the survivor is protected under guidelines issued by the Supreme Court and High Court. “There are guidelines from the Supreme Court and High Court that prohibit disclosing the victim's identity in any manner,” he said. He also mentioned that large volumes of information have come in and are being analyzed, and necessary steps are being taken accordingly.
Following the incident, the governing body of South Calcutta Law College has decided to shut down the college indefinitely. On Monday, a fact-finding team from an opposition party met the Police Commissioner. Meanwhile, three Public Interest Litigations (PILs) have been filed in the Calcutta High Court, and one petition has been submitted to the Supreme Court. The four arrested individuals are scheduled to be produced in court.
Previously, police reconstructed the incident at the place of occurrence in the presence of the survivor. According to sources, the survivor’s statement matches the surrounding circumstantial evidence. On the day of the incident, about 17 people were present on the college premises. Police are examining whether the last four individuals who left the college were asked to leave or exited voluntarily, and whether the survivor had informed the college authorities after the incident.
Kolkata Police issued a public advisory warning against attempts to reveal the identity of the survivor. “Strict legal action shall be initiated under the relevant provisions against anyone found involved in such acts,” the advisory stated. The advisory emphasized that sharing any information that could lead to identification of the survivor is a legal violation.
