CPI(M) leader beaten on road in Kharagpur for protesting wall demolition, shirt torn
A senior CPI(M) leader, Anil Das, was allegedly assaulted in broad daylight in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district. The incident occurred in the Kharida area of Kharagpur, where he was reportedly beaten with shoes, slapped, kicked, and thrown to the ground. His shirt was torn, and his face was smeared with color. A video of the assault has surfaced and is circulating widely. However, the authenticity of this video has not been independently verified by Taaza TV.
According to local sources, Anil Das was attacked by Trinamool Congress local leader Baby Kole and her supporters. He reportedly took shelter inside a nearby paint shop to escape but was pulled out and dragged onto the road, where the alleged assault continued. In the video, a woman can be seen pouring color over Das and hitting him repeatedly with a shoe while others watch and record.
Anil Das later lodged a written complaint at the Kharagpur Town Police Station. In his statement, he said, “A few days ago, Trinamool workers had demolished the wall of a local woman’s toilet. I had taken the woman to the police station to lodge a complaint. That is why I was attacked.” He claimed the assault was a direct result of his action supporting the complainant.
Following the incident, senior CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty reacted strongly. He stated, “This is the culture of Trinamool. Anyone who protests is attacked in this manner. This is happening everywhere. No one is safe under Trinamool rule.” Chakraborty’s remarks were aimed at condemning the alleged involvement of ruling party workers in such public violence.
Former Kharagpur MLA and Trinamool Congress leader Pradeep Sarkar visited the area after the incident. Speaking to reporters, he confirmed, “Baby Kole is a member of our party. However, I am not aware of the position she currently holds. I will ask the police to take immediate action.” No arrests have been reported in the case till now.
