Crack detected in pillar at Kolkata Metro's City Centre station; will services be affected?

A crack was detected in a pillar at Kolkata Metro's City Centre station on the Green Line, prompting Metro officials and structural engineers to inspect the site on Wednesday. The development comes after a similar incident at Kavi Subhash Metro station. Following the inspection, officials said the crack was confined to the outer surface of the pillar and had not affected its structural integrity. They stated that the station remained safe and Metro services on the Green Line continued to operate normally.

According to Metro authorities, the issue came to their notice through media reports, after which senior officials, including the Metro Railway chief and structural engineers, visited the station. Workers removed the plaster from the pillar during the inspection, revealing a visible crack. Officials clarified that the damage was limited to the cladding, or outer layer, and had not affected the core structure of the pillar. They also said the damaged portion would be repaired at the earliest.

Metro authorities said they are examining the cause of the crack and assessing whether it poses any operational risk. Metro Railway CPRO S.S. Kannan stated that preliminary findings indicated the crack was confined to the cladding and that there was no cause for concern. The incident follows the indefinite closure of Kavi Subhash Metro station last July after a crack was found in one of its pillars, where repair work is currently underway.
