Cricket match turns violent, Complaints of assault, firearm use filed

A cricket tournament at Jagarani Math in Haridevpur, Kolkata, turned violent on the night of December 28, leading to an FIR being registered against Anmoy, Nilanjan, and others. The incident occurred around 10:30 PM after a heated exchange between members of the winning and losing teams escalated into violence.

According to the complaint lodged by Dipankar Panda of Motilal Gupta Road, one of the accused, Anmoy, allegedly brandished a firearm during the altercation and struck him on the head with its butt, causing injuries. The accused were allegedly aided by another individual, Nilanjan, who used brickbats during the attack, resulting in swelling on the forehead of Mrinanka Sardar.

The altercation, which reportedly began with taunts over the match's outcome, spiraled into a full-blown brawl. Dipankar Panda has also alleged that the accused snatched his gold chain during the incident. The police have registered the case under multiple sections of the IPC, Arms Act, and Bengal Neighborhood Safety provisions, including sections 118(1)/115(2)/303(2)/351(3)/54 BNS and 25(1B)(a)/27 of the Arms Act.

Haridevpur police have initiated searches to apprehend the accused. "We are treating the matter with utmost seriousness given the allegations involving a firearm and physical assault," said a senior police officer. Residents expressed concern over the violent turn of events in a community recreational activity like a cricket match. "This is unacceptable. Such behavior disrupts the peace of the locality," one resident stated.
