Crocodiles escape enclosures at Alipore Zoo after record Kolkata rainfall overflows drains

Kolkata witnessed an unprecedented 251 mm of rainfall on Monday, which left several parts of the city waterlogged and disrupted normal life. The impact of the downpour also reached Alipore Zoological Garden, where water entered multiple animal enclosures.

According to zoo officials, the situation turned alarming when several crocodiles managed to escape their enclosures through an overflowing drain. Panic spread among staff members as the reptiles moved out of their designated areas. Rescue operations were immediately launched, and after hours of effort, the crocodiles were finally captured using nets and safely returned to their enclosures.

Officials confirmed that the situation has now been brought under control. The waterlogging has highlighted once again how heavy rainfall poses risks not just to residents, but also to wildlife safety.
