CSK stuns IPL 2025 with 17-year-old batting prodigy Ayush Mhatre’s mid-season trial call-up

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have turned heads by calling up 17-year-old Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre for mid-season trials during IPL 2025. The young batting talent, who went unsold in the mega auction last year, could be included in the squad if an existing CSK player suffers an injury or becomes unavailable. This sudden development has fueled speculation about potential squad changes as the franchise looks to bolster its struggling top order.

Confirming the move, CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan told The Times of India, “Yes, we’ve called him for trials. He has impressed our talent scouts. No (injuries); if there is any need, we will do that. We are not picking anybody, it is just a trial.” This statement clarifies that while Mhatre is not officially signed, the franchise is closely evaluating him.

Mhatre was earlier invited for trials in November 2024, ahead of the IPL auction, but did not find a buyer. However, his recent performances have drawn fresh attention. He played a key role in Mumbai’s domestic season, finishing as the team’s fourth-highest run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy with 471 runs in eight matches, including two centuries. He also excelled in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he hammered 458 runs in seven matches at an impressive average of 65.42.

His standout moment came against Saurashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy when he smashed a match-winning century, proving his ability to perform under pressure. His attacking approach at the top of the order aligns with CSK’s philosophy, making him an exciting prospect.

Meanwhile, CSK has had a slow start in IPL 2025. The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side is currently placed seventh in the standings with one win and two losses. Their top-order struggles, with Rachin Ravindra, Rahul Tripathi, and Gaikwad failing to deliver consistently, have left them searching for fresh solutions. While the franchise has not officially confirmed any injuries, Mhatre’s inclusion in trials suggests they are exploring all options to strengthen their batting lineup.

If Mhatre makes the cut, it would mark a dream IPL entry for the 17-year-old, showcasing CSK’s continued focus on grooming young talents for the big stage.
